September 2024 · Solana Foundation

Solana's own footprint, measured and offset on-chain

69%

fall in network emissions in a single year

The Foundation publishes network emissions rather than asserting they're negligible. Between 2023 and 2024 the figure fell from roughly 8,786 tonnes of CO₂ to roughly 2,671, a 69% reduction.

It also bought and retired 10,901.2 tonnes of offsets for 2022, the first time credits were purchased entirely on-chain. Those funded urban reforestation through City Forest Credits, REDD+ preservation at the Matavén Forest Unified Indigenous Reserve in Colombia, and the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve, an Indonesian peat swamp. 2024's purchases added Terrasos Biodiversity Units, each roughly 10m² of Colombian habitat protected for 20 to 30 years, supporting puma, spectacled bear and yellow-eared parrot.

There's a detail here worth sitting with: those retirements were executed through ecoToken and Sunrise Stake, two projects from this very community. Sunrise Stake has since shut down and ecoToken is mid-rebrand. The credits are retired permanently on a public chain; the organisations that retired them are not around to answer questions about them.
